  19.                         EXAMINING THE EARTHLIGHT THEORY...
  20.                         An investigation into a mini-flap.

  24.           By now  we've all heard of "earth lights." Paul Devereux of Great
  25.        Britian coined the term in 1982 when  he  published EARTH LIGHTS. In
  26.        that book, Devereux developed the idea that UFOs are  a byproduct of
  27.        natural processes in the earth.
  28.  
  29.           Micheal Persinger  of  Canada  had  already  been saying the same
  30.        thing for years in a continous outpouring  of  papers  in  which  he
  31.        developed his Tectonic Strain Theory of UFOs.

  36.             Michael Persinger is the researcher working with  pulsating and
  37.             targeted magnetic fields in the brain.  He and his team created
  38.             a "helmet"  using nails wrapped with many turns of wire to form
  39.             cylindrical solenoids.  These  were  then  mounted in a sort of
  40.             football helmet to allow them to hang over different  parts  of
  41.             the brain.

  43.             When connected  to  a computer as a "printer", various patterns
  44.             can be output to magnetically stimulate the brain with specific
  45.             and repeatable patterns.

  47.             One of the most fascinating results  of the experiment involved
  48.             the use of subjects with their eyes closed.   While  a  certain
  49.             pattern was   projected   or  "printed"  to  the  solenoids,  a
  50.             flashlight was  aimed toward  the  subject's  eyes  and  slowly
  51.             lowered.  (a loose description follows)

  53.             Asked to describe what they saw, EVERY SUBJECT  said  the  same
  54.             thing,
  55.  
  56.                 "I see  a  UFO  coming  down, it is landing.  Now there are
  57.                  small grey people coming  out  of it towards me.  They are
  58.                  taking me into the ship.  Now they are doing  somekind  of
  59.                  physical exploration.   I  am  now  being  taken  from the
  60.                  ship."

  62.             As the flashlight beam is lifted up, the subject's say that the
  63.             UFO is now ascending and moving away.

  70.             Dennis Stacy   investigated  Persinger's  work  in  Canada  and
  71.             reported on it in a December  issue  of OMNI.  I believe it was
  72.             88'.
  73.  
  74.             We also  have  papers regarding other experiments  in  inducing
  75.             feelings or  actions  in  the body using magnetic, electric and
  76.             sonic fields.  These are being  placed  on KeelyNet as time and
  77.             funds allow, with as much technical data as we can provide.

  81.           Unfortunately, despite Devereux and Persinger's  passion  for the
  82.        concept of a  UFO/earth  stress  link,  neither  researcher  has yet
  83.        proven the case that UFOs are purely a natural phenomenon.

  85.           Rock has been crushed in the laboratory,  eliciting extraordinary
  86.        brief pulses of  light,  but  the result of that experiment--in  the
  87.        words of Brian  Brady, who developed the experiment--the crushing of
  88.        rock cannot account for "discrete" light forms seen at high altitude
  89.        (read : spherical UFOs at high altitude).

  91.           In fact,  Brady's experiment  even  does  away  with  the  famous
  92.        "piezo-electric effect" as  a  source of UFOs; in  terms  of  energy
  93.        output, piezo-electricity is simply too weak to account for anything
  94.        more than momentary, diffuse glows of light.

  99.             If you want to demonstrate this effect for yourself Wintergreen
  100.             Life Saver  candies will generate this piezo-electric glow when
  101.             you crunch them between your  teeth.   Turn  out  the light and
  102.             chew one or more while watching the glow from  your  mouth in a
  103.             mirror.

  105.             As a  matter  of  fact,  when  this effect was first discovered
  106.             about these candies, many people working in hospitals percieved
  107.             them as a very real danger.   The  concern  was  that people in
  108.             oxygen tents  might  chew  one  and the resultant  spark  might
  109.             ignite and explode the oxygen in the enclosed tent.

  111.             A scientific  study  was done on this phenomenon and the effect
  112.             had no ignition effect whatsoever.
  113.

  116.           More importantly, how can a mysterious,  elusive and unidentified
  117.        physical mechanism create  STRUCTURED  objects? This  is  the  great
  118.        failing of the  "earth-lights"  theory; it attempts to solve the UFO
  119.        mystery by ignoring the actual content of the UFO report.
  120.  
  121.           Any unexplained  object seen in  an  earthquake-prone  region--no
  122.        matter how artificial in appearance or "intelligent"  in its actions
  123.        -suddenly becomes a  byproduct  of ionization, plasmas or some other
  124.        little-understood electrical process.

  126.           In 1981 I began an investigation  into  UFO  sightings  that  had
  127.        occured over 20   years  in  a  single  area,  the   Yakima   Indian
  128.        Reservation in south-central Washington state.

  136.           In the early 1980s, the MUFON UFO Journal published several of my
  137.        papers based on  my  preliminary  findings.  Now  the J. Allen Hynek
  138.        Center for UFO Studies has published my complete findings as a book:
  139.        EXAMINING THE EARTHLIGHT THEORY: The Yakima UFO Microcosm.

  141.           EXAMINING THE  EARTHLIGHT THEORY  looks  microscopically  at  the
  142.        Tectonic Strain Theory of UFOs. I use the Yakima  data  (nearly  200
  143.        reports from a   variety   of   witnesses,   plus   numerous   color
  144.        photographs) to test the viability  of  the  Tectonic  Strain Theory
  145.        which Persinger believes explains the Yakima sightings.

  147.           The Yakima data form a "microcosm," a fascinating, self-contained
  148.        world of strange  reports,  which  include  a range  of  unexplained
  149.        occurences--orange balls of   light,   CE3's,  possible  abductions,
  150.        Bigfoot sightings, daylight objects, subterrrean sounds and more.

  152.           Nearly every part of the Reservation  experienced  some  type  of
  153.        unexplained event over  a 20 year period, making the  Yakima  Indian
  154.        Reservation an excellent  "laboratory"  for  detailed examination of
  155.        UFO phenomena.

  157.           Earthquake faults mark the ridges  of the Reservation; it lies at
  158.        the foot of the volcanic Cascade Range; and fire  lookouts  were  in
  159.        place on top of three mountains to observe and record strange lights
  160.        year after year...the  right  conditions for data collection, plenty
  161.        of UFOs and more than enough meticulous  documentation  to  whet the
  162.        appetite of a curious scientist in serach of an explanation.

  164.           EXAMINING THE EARTHLIGHT THEORY takes the reader  on a historical
  165.        journey, following the sightings to their most recent occurence. All
  166.        data of this  unique  mini-flap  are used to thoroughly evaluate the
  167.        basic components of  the  Tectonic   Strain  Theory.  EXAMINING  THE
  168.        EARTHLIGHT THEORY is an experience in detective work,  where all the
  169.        facts of the  Yakima  micrcosm  are weighed, sifted and evaluated in
  170.        the systematic pursuit  of  a  solution   to   the  mystery  of  the
  171.        microcosm.
